  • Blessy MAN’s recent artistic practice explores the social system. The artist utilizes daily objects to create her work, in order to express a strong interaction with her surroundings. “First they came…” is an installation that reconstructs the artist’s studio where she works on her research of microaggression; this work includes an assembly of the following: piles of egg cartons; resin eggs that made with ground eggshells; tools for casting and molding; the table, the tripod, the apron; and the eggshells on the floor with a plastic film underneath. The ensemble of eggs, the mold of making the eggs, and also the egg containers suggest a correlation, but displays "work-in-progress", as if the artist at the present working. The title is borrowed from the prose poem composed by the German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller in 1946, to convey the theme of the Holocaust and discrimination. The poem starts with "First they came", and ends with “me”, and through repetition of both words and themes, it creates a sense of detachment from the victims, and to show how cowardice and silence have become accomplices to injustice. The artist advocates that having the audacity to stand out for oneself is decisive - every little step counts, in order to preclude any growth of the cumulative erosion and deterioration.
