MFA Graudate Exhibition 2018
3/F Cheng Ming Building, New Asia College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
The Art of CUHK features the Postgraduate Exhibitions including Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Graduate Exhibition. 2 MFA graduates, with Eric LAI Wai Lam and Michelle LEE Ho Wing, will showcase their creative practices in various media, concerning themes ranging from aesthetics, historical trajectory, cultural connotation and social elements, offering multiple layers of perspectives and possibilities of artistic creation.
Eric LAI Wai Lam presents his new series of ink paintings in his MFA graduation show “Between the Folds”. The exhibition aims to reflect the dominant and being controlled relationship between the artist and the content of a painting. Without a proper draft, this series of artwork is started with a piece of crumpled rice paper. After the process that ink and colors are sprayed on it, marks of folds and crumples are recorded. Randomly overlaying marks gradually form different clues of image. The artist then links up the relationship of clues between the marks until certain seemingly readable images are presented.
“Made to be Filled in” features another MFA graduate, Michelle LEE Ho Wing, who provides another dimension to the notion of library in her artistic research by narrating in a prose-like style. LEE sees her practice as an allusion to the circulation of library books during the Imperial Japanese Occupation of Hong Kong. Whereas the books were consistently put into certain order, consequently those dynamic statuses created a temporality both textual and physical space. Her research is initially inspired by the looted books in warfare and she further extends her interest to the site of libraries. She excavates her personal imagination from the descriptive world in Chan Kwan Po Diaries, which was written by CHAN as the librarian of Fung Ping Shan Library, and then steps into the textual space to explore the notion of voids in different objects.
