It is the 60th anniversary of the Department of Fine Arts of CUHK. Over the past sixty years, the department has been fostering a broad spectrum of art talents in Hong Kong and has made significant contribution to the art circle locally and internationally. As a youthful part of the local art scene, students from the Department of Fine Arts, the Chinese University of Hong Kong are passionately preparing for “The Art of CUHK 2017”.
Similar to the previous years, “The Art of CUHK 2017” provides a platform for students to exercise their autonomy: the formation and structure of the exhibition committee, administrative work, curation, publication, sponsorship seeking and the setting up of the exhibition venue are all coordinated by students. The event lasts for a few months: there will be exhibitions and a series of activities such as workshops and talks, providing an opportunity for our students to showcase their hard work, while inviting people from the art circle and the public to visit our annual show. Furthermore, public seminars will be held to promote academic discussion, in which art professionals will be invited to share about the relationship between art, archive and social engagement.
“The Art of CUHK 2017” offers successional exhibitions in two phases. Phase I includes BA Graduate Exhibition, Undergraduate Exhibition, MFA year 1 exhibition and MFA Graduate Exhibition which will run from 27th May till 27th June; Phase II which includes MA year 1 exhibition and MA Graduate Exhibition will be scheduled from 5th July to 31th July. “The Art of CUHK 2017” is the orchestrated results of students’ artistic ideas and experiment after a year of learning and practicing. Through the exhibitions, the artists respond to voices from within and reflect upon the progression of the society.
Titled “Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love for You”, the BA Graduate Exhibition this year try to look into the relationship between the concept of “contemporary: and “eternity”. The show expresses our graduates’ reminiscence and contemplation in the four years of studies in CUFA, also reveals their love towards fine arts.
The Undergraduate Exhibition will show the joint effort of ten exhibition proposals resulted from discussions and seminars that were initiated by students.
The Art of CUHK features the Postgraduate Exhibitions including Master of Arts(MFA) Graduate Exhibition and MFA Year 1 Exhibition in the same period. Four MFA graduates and two MFA year 1 students will share their creative works in various media, concerning the themes from aesthetics, historical trajectory, cultural connotation and social aspects of the practice of art, each offering with multiple views of artistic creation.
